Frequently asked questions

Will this make my store “ADA compliant”?

No — and be wary of anyone who promises that. Automated tools detect only a portion of accessibility issues; many barriers can only be found by a person. Our scan and report are not legal advice, not an audit by a person, and not a certification. They don’t guarantee ADA or WCAG compliance and don’t protect you from lawsuits or demand letters. What they do is point to real, fixable barriers quickly and cheaply.

What does the free scan check?

We load your start page in a real (headless) Chrome browser, then up to 2 more pages from the same site — we look for a product page, the cart and a collection page. Each page is tested with axe-core against automatically testable WCAG 2.0 / 2.1 / 2.2 Level A and AA rules, plus a few best practices (which we label as such).

What is WCAG, and how does it relate to the ADA?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the W3C’s technical standard for accessible websites. US courts and the Department of Justice often reference WCAG Level AA when discussing website accessibility, but how the ADA applies to your business is a legal question for a lawyer.

What’s in the $49 full report?

Up to 25 pages, every detected issue grouped by WCAG 2.2 success criterion, the exact elements affected (CSS selector and HTML), plain-English fix instructions with Shopify and WooCommerce tips, a prioritised checklist, and a guide to the manual checks automation can’t do. Delivered by email as HTML + PDF, usually within 15 minutes. See a sample.

Do you fix the issues for me? Do you sell an overlay widget?

No. We tell you exactly what to fix; you or your developer fix it in your theme and content. We don’t sell overlays — they don’t repair the underlying code.

What is the “a11y.bytkit.com scanner” in my server logs?

That is us. Our browser identifies itself as Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; a11y.bytkit.com scanner; +https://a11y.bytkit.com/faq.html#scanner). It only visits public pages when someone requests a scan, loads at most 3 pages (free) or 25 pages (paid report) per request, and respects robots.txt. To opt out, add to your robots.txt:

User-agent: a11y.bytkit.com
Disallow: /

Questions or abuse reports: support@bytkit.com.

Why did my scan fail?

Common reasons: the store is password-protected (Shopify stores in development), the site blocks automated browsers, robots.txt disallows us, the address has a typo, or the page took longer than about 25 seconds to load. Only public http(s) websites on standard ports can be scanned — private networks and IP addresses are blocked for security.

Are there limits?

Free scans: 5 per day per visitor and a shared daily cap across all visitors (to keep this free). Limits reset at midnight UTC.

What about monitoring?

We’re considering a $19/month plan that re-scans your store and emails you when new issues appear. It isn’t available yet — you can join the waitlist with a checkbox when you buy the report. Nothing is charged for the waitlist.

Refunds?

If we can’t scan your site or the report doesn’t arrive, you get a full refund. See the refund policy.
